The Orlando Area Rowing Society (OARS) attended the US Rowing Southeast Youth Championships May 12-14, 2017, at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Georgia, winning 3rd Place in the Region on points (384 points from 8 entries, behind Sarasota Crew with 24 entries and Atlanta Juniors with 14 entries) on the strong performance of the entire team – winning 5 medals on 8 entries, including two gold medals. Four of these boats will represent OARS in the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida, on June 9 – 11, 2017.
The team-wide performance by OARS included all 4 Women’s boats qualifying for Finals (with 2 medal-winning performances) and all 4 Men’s boats qualifying for Finals (with 3 medal-winning performances).
Our Women’s V4+ (Savannah Sellers, Jaime Armitage, Alison Haas, Jessie Woy, and Samantha Sizelove) and Women’s Junior V8+ (Jenny Finch, Megan Ford, Nicole Abruzzo, Kaitlyn Bennett, Payton Graziotti, Morgan Cunningham, Hailey Waller, Jaelin Figueroa, and Ashlie Infante) both won gold. In addition, the Men’s 2V4+ (Tyler Darden, Michael George, Brandon Spangler, Logan Mahalek, and Allie Batten) won silver (though, unfortunately, there is no Men’s 2V4+ category at Nationals), and both the Men’s V4+ (Aaron Russo, Cameron McElwee, Matthew DiRico, Zachary Lung, and James Sabis) and Men’s V8+ (John Kiely, Ryan McKinney, Sean McKinney, Valentine Lindsay, John Stephan, Owen Villaneuva, Timothy Miller, Nathan Kohl, and Clarissa Barquist) both won bronze.
Expectations are high, as last season OARS qualified 5 boats for the 2016 Youth Rowing National Championships at Mercer Lake, NJ.
